Our History...

On the 14th of March 1978 under the guiding hands of P.D.Maunsell, (Zimmerman & Hobbs) ,Jack Paines, (Norda International Ltd.), G. F. Rocke, (Wilson & Mansfield Ltd.), E. R. Harper (Givaudan & Co. Ltd.) A. H. Samuelson (P.Samuelson & Co. Ltd..),

D.F.Cox (F.D.Copeland & Sons Ltd.),L.E. Ballam (Bush Boake Allen Ltd.), F. K. Saville (White Stevenson Ltd.), and G B. Cooper (Proprietary Perfumes Ltd.), the British Essential Oil Association was incorporated having been formed by the above named  group on 24th January 1978 and had as its first secretary Paddy Gray. The Association operated from 69 Cannon Street until 1989 during which time many respected names associated with the industry were instrumental in stabilising the BEOA and getting it  recognised as an Association.  Those mentioned above together with people like Ron Neal, Geoff Sutton, John Buck, John Carr, F. Drought, E . Storey R. Sutton, A. Pittman , R. Hyde,  and more recently Hugo Bovill, Peter Bellingham, Reg Wells,  Ray Stapleton, Roy Powell, G. Frost, David Moyler, John Austin, Terry  Allin, Paul Sherrington, Mike Clark, Roy Smith, Roger Dyer, Terry Lineham, Mike Richards, Martin Gill, Steve Smith, Tony Payne, Ian Allwork, Philippe Caumont, Peter Hitchen, Graham Page, Ken Goodger, Jason Wilson and Julie Richards, who became the first woman elected to the committee. She has since been joined by Debbie Mockford. All have contributed to, and reinforced, the original concept and continue to give their time and expertise freely to the Association.

The Association was formed originally to be a forum and buffer between the industry and government both in the UK and in Brussels.  Its aim has been to maintain and improve general standards of, and protect the commercial and economic interests of, persons who are involved in the Essential Oils Industry.

From the beginning the Association has sought to foster closer contact between member companies. Whilst the Annual General Meeting, in recent years held at the RAC club in London, continues to be the most widely supported event of our year increasingly social events including quiz, film and lecture evenings, and more recently a formal Dinner Dance have engendered the Association’s image..

In recent years the BEOA has increasingly sought closer liaison with other industry Associations including BFA, BEMA and EFFA.  The early groundwork done by Mr. Hugo Bovill and Mr. David Moyler finally bore fruit when the “27 Club” was introduced to allow members of BEOA, who were not members of those Associations, to access information emanating from them.  As a result the Association now has a better overview of the industry and has taken on the might of Europe (and lost) with regards to the anti-dumping campaign against Chinese Coumarin. In doing so however we have gained valuable experience for the future.

The Association was one of the founder members of the European Federation for Essential Oils (EFEO) and has a permanent seat on the Board. contributing to its valuable work towards the Industry on a European basis whilst aware of international ramifications and working hopefully towards solutions on European Legislation with latterly a special project on REACH as well as supporting the stand that Essential Oils are a single ingredient and should not be classed as a molecule and thereby subject to extra legislation.

The Association’s Technical Committee has become an important factor in the BEOA’s progress of recent years. Its outstanding work in publishing an annual Technical Handbook which contains a fully reviewed and revised CHIP list and the newly implemented R65 data together with CAS, EOSA and EINECS numbers is recognised throughout the industry.

Latterly it has also become responsible for producing the Sensitisers Listing and Sensitiser Analysis (in conjunction with PRODAROM) which has been adopted by EFFA and recognised as the Official Lists throughout Europe. Another useful recent addition is the ACRONYM list.

The Association’s Technical Expertise has also been involved in updating and adding European and US Codings to the Biocides/INEL listing produced by EFFA. Together with other useful data this has been e-mailed to members and is available on the BEOA website

Through the auspices of Fuerst Day Lawson Ltd., (one of our earliest members); our Technical Committee chairman Mr David Moyler is able to represent the BEOA on the committees of The Royal Society of Chemistry (results from this are published in the Perfumer and Flavorist Journal), the Hazard Communications Global Committee, with EFFA/IFRA/IOFI the new Global Harmonisation System Task Force, the EFFA REACH Naturals Task Force, and is the Chairman of the Transport Task Force. He guest lectures to Leatherhead Food Research and to IFEAT when required. He is the recipient of papers from EFFA Fragrance Experts, IFRA Fragrance Expert Analysis EFFA REACH, The British Society of Perfumers and the British Society of Flavourists and whenever possible is an attendee at their meetings. The input from our Technical Committee to the IOFI/IFRA and EFFA organisations and our commitment to EFEO ensure that the BEOA is now being recognised internationally. Fuerst Day Lawson Ltd., have helped the Association’s progress by supplying three former chairmen.(Ron Neal, Maurice Day Lawson and David Moyler) as has  F. D. Copeland and Sons (Doug Cox, Roy Smith and Steve Smith) and the most recent ex Chairman Mr. Steve Smith is our representative on the EFEO Board and a member of the EFEO Technical Committee.  Our present Chairman Mr. Martin Gill and former chairman Mr. Hugo Bovill are both members of the IFEAT Executive Committee.  Thanks are due to the superb support our Executive and Technical Committees members receive from their companies allowing them to work on behalf of the members of the Association and the industry.

The Initial concept of the Association has been extended to include Aromatic Chemicals as part of its mandate and the recent addition of Anthony Weston to the Executive will enhance the chemical expertise within the Committee.

The Secretariat has evolved through Paddy Gray, Julie Krauze, R. A. Marshall and Walter Anzer to the present, and this secretariat which consists of Pamela Freeman and myself Malcolm Irvine are the happy receivers of the results of the hard work done by these able people. The feeling that we have just about grown up to be what was originally envisaged in 1978, is a prevalent one, however hold tight, we feel there is much more to be accomplished.
